What Are Teepa Snow’s Dementia Care Methods?

A series of simple techniques based on understanding the areas of the brain that no longer work properly or no longer use the other parts of the brain that are still active.

Teepa’s Methods Empower Our Team & Family Caregivers So:

      • The caregiver experiences less resistance & less stress.
      • They understand WHAT is happening to the brain of the person in their care.
      • They learn HOW changes to the brain and behavior typically progress over time.
      • They can use practical skills that can help you “survive” and connect with the person in your care.

What Does This Mean for You and Your ‘Ohana?

You or your loved one will be cared for by a team who is trained in the latest Dementia Care Skills including:

      • Improved Quality of Life & Care: Our caregivers have a deeper understanding of Dementia which allows for  more effective, tailored care for each individual patient’s needs.
      • Enhanced Caregiver Skills: Our team performs New Practical, Hands-on Techniques like Positive Physical Approach™ (PPA) and Hand-Under-Hand™ (HUH) to improve interactions and assist with daily tasks.
      • Reduction of Challenging Behaviors: By understanding Dementia Brain changes and any ‘unmet’ needs of our patients, our team can better respond to and prevent difficult Dementia Behaviors and help create a calmer environment.
      • Increased Caregiver Confidence: This training empowers our team, and family caregivers, with the knowledge and skills that boost their confidence to handle various Dementia care situations.
      • Expanded Communication & Interactions With Patients: Our team learns to recognize and respond to non-verbal cues, improving communication with Dementia patients.
      • Consistent Care Approach: Teepa Snow techniques provide practical, hands-on techniques and a unified approach that ensure consistency of care from our team to better support our patients and families in a more positive & respectful way.

We’ve Enhanced Our Current Dementia Care In Several Ways**:

      • Positive Physical Approach (PPA):  A specialized technique for approaching and connecting with dementia patients that reduces anxiety and improves interactions.
      • Hand-under-Hand (HuH) Technique:  An evidence-based method that allows caregivers to assist with daily activities while promoting the patient’s sense of control and participation.
      • GEMS Model:  We use this classification system that helps caregivers adapt to the changing abilities of people with Dementia as the condition progresses.

This Teepa Snow Model helps us tailor our care approach as the disease progresses and helps ensure appropriate support throughout the dementia journey.

  Sapphire: True blue, optimal cognition

Diamond: Clear and sharp, but with some signs of change

Emerald: Green and on the go with a purpose, but often misguided

Amber: Caught in a moment of time, significant memory loss

Ruby: Deep and strong in color, unable to initiate most actions

Pearl: Hidden within a shell, severe physical and cognitive disability

      •  Person-Centered Care:  We proudly offered Person Centered Care and have offered this type of care for many years. It is important to recognize each individual’s unique needs, preferences, and abilities when offering Home Care for all of our patients.
