How to Keep Your Summer Workout Safe

On Maui, exercise combined with our high temperatures and humidity can lead to dangerous heat-related illness.  

Remember These Important Points to Keep Your Summer Workout Safe:
  • Our bodies regulate heat by releasing sweat. Sweat allows our bodies to cool down.
  • When you sweat your body loses fluid — if your body cannot handle the heat and the fluid loss, that can lead to heatstroke, heat exhaustion, cramps and collapse.
  • With Maui’s high humidity, sweat doesn’t readily evaporate from your skin. As crazy as it sounds, this can cause your body temperature to increase even more!

How Can You Prevent Heat-related Illness?
  • Check Temperature & Humidity Levels: On Maui, your body needs time to adapt to changes in heat during seasonal fluctuations. Pay attention to the heat all year — especially from June to October.
  • Drink Fluids: Before, during and after your workout, consistently drink fluids to stay hydrated. This helps your body to sweat so it can cool down! Consider using electrolytes to replace those lost by sweating. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink fluids – it can be too late by then.
  • Dress Appropriately: Lightweight, loose-fitting, breathable clothing helps sweat evaporate and keeps you cooler. Wear light-colored clothing and hats.
  • Morning or Evening Exercise: These times of day tend be cooler. If you must exercise mid-day, do so in shady areas or do a water workout in the ocean or a pool.  When it’s just too hot and humid for you, exercise inside — work out at the gym, walk laps inside the mall, or climb stairs inside an air-conditioned building.
Understand Possible Medical Risks

If you are 60+, Pay Attention – heat-related illness can start slowly and worsen if left untreated. There are medical conditions or medications that can increase your risk of a heat-related illness.

If you plan to exercise in the heat, check in with your doctor to make sure your meds will not increase your risk of heat-related illness.

Pay Attention to These Warning Signs:
    • Muscle cramps
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Weakness
    • Confusion
    • Fatigue
    • Irritability
    • Low blood pressure
    • Headache
    • Increased heart rate
    • Excessive sweating
    • Dizziness or lightheadedness
    • Visual problems
What to Do If You Overheat 
If you develop ANY of the Warning Signs Listed Above:
    • Stop Exercising Immediately
    • Get Out Of The Heat or Sun
    • Drink Fluids – water or a sports drink
    • Lower Your Body Temperature Right Away
With Heat Exhaustion, you Need to Rapidly Cool Yourself
The most effective way to rapidly cool down is:
    • Immerse your body in a cold-water or ice-water tub.
    • Dump water over your head or spray yourself with water from a hose or shower.
    • Remove extra clothing or sports equipment right away.
    • Fan your body or place cool, wet towels or ice packs on your neck, forehead and under your arms.
    • Drink fluids such as water or a sports drink.

 If you don’t feel better within about 20 minutes  –  

Go To The ER and seek emergency medical care. 

Heat Exhaustion can turn into Heat Stroke, a serious medical emergency.
