What Are The Benefits Of Exercise For Seniors?

 The right exercise plan can help Seniors live their best possible life as they age by:

      • Maintaining/increasing muscle mass
      • Increasing energy levels, mental health, mood and quality of life

What Should Seniors Consider Before Starting An Exercise Program?

 

      • Bobby typically recommends consulting your Doctor if you have pre-existing conditions such as heart disorders, palpitations, symptoms of chest pain, shortness of breath, etc. 
      • This is important for seniors with serious pre-existing health conditions or mobility issues.
      • As a fitness expert, he creates a program that is tailored to your specific needs and health.
      • Your custom plan will start slowly and any changes to your plan will be based upon your personal progress over time.

 

Are There Safe and Effective Exercises for Seniors?

 Yes! Bobby’s approach to exercise for Seniors will help keep you safer and live with more functionality and ease as you age. Plus, the work outs are fun and I change them up so you enjoy them more!

      • For those 60+, he focuses on Strength, “Functional Life” Movements, Flexibility and Mobility.
      • Bobby recommends 150 minutes of moderate exercise every week – this could include (3) 50-minute workouts or several shorter workouts depending on my client’s needs and physical health.
      • A few key exercises he focuses on include using Water Workouts, Seated Workouts and/or Cycling for safe, low-impact results.
      • He also uses resistance bands, wall push-ups, sit and stand exercises, stretching, walking, weights, seated leg lifts, ankle lifts and low-impact cardio depending on individual needs.

During your initial meeting, Bobby will:

      • Perform a Full Body Assessment to gauge your current functionality
      • Use a Movement Screening to determine the best “corrective exercises”
      • Create the best Exercise Plan for your current health and situation.

 

Your Personal Assessment is used to create achievable personal goals and I coach my clients to:

      • Use proper form and technique to help reduce the risk of injury
      • Start with slow warm-ups
      • Listen to their bodies
      • Teach them to Stop if they experience any pain or discomfort
      • Use low-intensity workouts
      • Perform proper stretching

 

Are There Exercises Seniors Should Avoid?

Yes!  Bobby coaches his clients aged 60+ to avoid activities that may put excessive strain on their joints or increase their risk of injury – like heavy weightlifting or using exercises that require rapid or extreme movement.

The following should probably be avoided if you’re over the age of 65: (Bobby will make that determination after your assessment)

      • Abdominal crunches
      • Bench press
      • Deadlift
      • High-intensity interval training
      • Leg press
      • Long-distance running
      • Power clean
      • Rock climbing
      • Squats with dumbbells or weights
      • Upright row
